greys anatomy music event sara ramirez abc 320 'Grey's Anatomy' music event: Was it 'Rent' or low rent?

We would be lying if we didn’t admit that we have been looking forward to the music event on “Grey’s Anatomy” for just as long as you have. We’d also be lying if we didn’t say that when the doctors first broke out into song we giggled a bit at the sheer absurdity of it all.
And we’re not sure if we ever really got used to them breaking out in song. A musical episode is just really hard to do. And we know very few television shows that can pull it off. Even in most musical theatre we’ve watched, plot falls victim to the conceit of the musical performances.
Were the voices good? Certainly. Were the songs entertaining? In and of themselves, yes. Ultimately, though, we were never quite able to suspend our disbelief. In other words, it never stopped feeling jarring.
We would have loved to just watch Callie (Sara Ramirez) and the team play the dramatic events of her injuries and surgeries out without having a random song pull us out of the story.

“Grey’s” has done this colleague in danger storyline before and nailed it. They’ve even had the audacity to kill a well-liked regular character before. We don’t think adding music to this episode made it better. It took a risk with the musical elements, definitely, but we’ve seen them take bigger risks that truly did become game-changers for the series and not one character had to sing a note.
What’s your take? Did it bowl you over or are you just glad it’s over?
