guns n rose geffen Guns N' Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Heart earn Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominations; Kiss and Rush passed over againWelcome to the Jungle.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is out with their 2011 nominees. Topping the list are the seminal ’80s band Guns N’ Roses, alternative darling The Cure and funk-metal group Red Hot Chili Peppers as well as Heart and the Beastie Boys.

In a statement, President and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation Joel Peresman says, “The 2012 Nominees embody the broad scope of what ‘rock and roll’ means. From vocal groups to hip hop, from singer-songwriters to hard rocking artists, this group represents the spirit of what we celebrate at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.”

G N’ R earned their place among the nominees through the mega-selling album “Appetite for Destruction” as well as subsequent albums “Lies” and “Use Your Illusion.” The Cure, in a lot of ways, was the anchor for college music stations through the 1980s and paved the way for future alternative bands. Heart landed on the ballot by fronting ’70s guitar rock with the melodic voices of sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson.

Of course nothing draws controversy like these nominations, especially when you consider who hasn’t yet gotten a shot at the Hall. That lists reads like a “Who’s Who” of music royalty including The B-52s, Joan Baez, Peter Gabriel, Kiss, Willie Nelson, Rush, The Smiths and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

The 27th annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is set for April 14, 2012.
