hannibal laurence fishburne mads mikkelsen dinner nbc 'Hannibal' Season 2 renewal: 13 episodes set for 2014 on NBC“Hannibal” fans can relax — at least until it’s time to watch the next episode — because NBC has officially renewed the serial killer drama for a second season.

Just like Season 1, the renewal order is for 13 episodes and Season 2 will launch “no earlier than midseason” per a NBC press release. Three more episodes are set to air before the June 20 Season 1 finale.

“Hannibal” premiered on NBC in April to strong reviews and decent ratings, but saw its viewership start to slide with episode 3 and, until today, was the only scripted series of the 2012-13 network TV season still awaiting word on a renewal or cancellation.

Even as it was hit with multiple controversies surrounding its graphic violence — including a decision by NBC and creator Bryan Fuller to pull an episode from the show’s US broadcasts, and NBC’s Salt Lake City affiliate dropping the show from its schedule — “Hannibal” has built up a small but loyal fan base. Season 1 will join the Amazon Instant Video line-up later this year, which could help increase its audience.

While “Hannibal” is far from a ratings powerhouse, NBC’s renewal announcement touted the show’s median viewer age of 45.7 as the youngest of any drama on NBC, CBS or ABC, the impressive 75% boost in the show’s 18-49 ratings when DVR usage is factored in and the show’s appeal to “upscale” viewers (defined as homes with $100K+ incomes).
