avogadro.jpgAnd now for the holiday the crew from “The Big Bang Theory” will enjoy…

At 6:02 a.m. on Sunday (Oct. 23) it officially became National Mole Day. This is in honor of the chemistry constant 6.022 x 10^23 known as Avogadro’s Number or simply, a mole.

National Mole Day began in 1991. According to their website, “The purpose of the National Mole Day Foundation was and continues to be to get all persons, especially students, enthused about chemistry.”

This isn’t the only holiday nerds love. There’s also Pi Day on March 14 (or 3/14 as in 3.14) and Star Wars Day on May 4 (as in “May the Fourth be with you.” That joke works if you have a lisp). “Star Trek” fans also have their own holiday, Seven of Nine Day on July 9.

Here’s a quick joke from the Mole Day website to really get you in the spirit:

Q: How much does Avogadro exaggerate?
A: He makes mountains out of mole hills.
