We realize that by the time this post is live, the breakfast window will have closed for most of you. But Friday (June 1) is National Donut Day, and doughnuts are not, after all, just for breakfast.
The day is celebrated every year on the first Friday in June, having started in the 1930s to honor female Salvation Army volunteers who served doughnuts to soldiers in World War I. Now, it means that doughnut shops across the country are willing to give you free, delicious pastries.
Local shops will have their own deals, but here’s a rundown of what some of the bigger national chains are offering in celebration of National Donut Day:
Dunkin’ Donuts: Free doughnut with the purchase of any beverage. Dunkin’ is also running a trivia contest on its Twitter feed where followers can win $50 gift cards.
Krispy Kreme: Free doughnut of any variety, no purchase necessary.
Tim Hortons: Free doughnut with any other purchase, after you “like” it on Facebook and print a coupon.
Somewhere in Springfield, Homer Simpson is very happy.
