harry belafonte stand your ground protest Harry Belafonte joins 'stand your ground' protest in FloridaLegendary entertainer Harry Belafonte joined a protest Friday (July 26) in Florida, urging Gov. Rick Scott to examine the state’s self-defense laws after George Zimmerman was acquitted in the killing of Trayvon Martin, reports the AP.

Protestors have been at the Florida state capitol for nearly two weeks, demanding a special session of the state legislature be called to change the “stand your ground” laws.

Belafonte tells the AP that seeing the protestors “makes [his] autumn heart dance like it was spring,” and urges Gov. Scott to act before the situation becomes “ungovernable.”

“At the moment all of this is governable, all of this is in a place where ti can be debated and analyzed and discussed in a very peaceful, calm, productive way,” says Belafonte. He doesn’t think the protestors will get violent, but he does think they could bring the state to a “grinding halt.”

The protestor is led by the Dream Defenders and Ciara Taylor of the organization says that so far 28 legislators back their idea to examine not only the “stand your ground” laws, but also racial profiling and school’s “zero tolerance” policy for students. She adds that they are willing to stay there for weeks.

“I’m prepared to spend a whole month, a whole season,” says Taylor. “I’m prepared to be here till next legislative session if that’s necessary.”
