Season 2 is getting a Litchfield import in the form of “Orange Is the New Black”
alum Madeline Brewer. She joins the Netflix series as Miranda, a graphic novelist traveling cross-country to Los Angeles to pursue her career who she finds herself side-tracked by Hemlock Grove.
Brewer, who has plenty of love
for her “OITNB” character Tricia, is quick to draw a fictional comparison between the two Netflix shows that made her a star. “[Tricia’s] escaped jail, she’s put on a new persona, she’s gotten through … witness protection, even though I don’t know if you can actually do that if you’re an escaped convict. Now she’s traveling across country as far away from Litchfield as she can get,” Brewer jokes of Miranda actually being Tricia to Zap2it
and members of the press invited to a “Hemlock Grove” set visit in October 2013.
For Brewer, it was an easy “yes” when she was asked to audition for “Hemlock Grove.” Miranda is a very different character than Tricia, though she has her own type of darkness. “She’s so cool. She’s dark, obviously. Like, all her clothing is dark, but she’s got this mysterious thing going on and I think that kind of later in the season she kind of captivates the two boys,” Brewer says. “Who doesn’t like a woman of mystery? She’s smart, and I have a lot to discover about her.”
Miranda ends up being connected to both Roman Godfrey (Bill Skarsgard) and Peter Rumancek (Landon Liboiron), two former friends who found themselves at odds at the end of Season 1. In real life, Brewer quickly became friends with Skarsgard and Liboiron. For their part, both men were happy to have Brewer bring a character like Miranda to the show.
“Roman and Peter are so kind of heavy,” Liboiron tells Zap2it. “There’s such a weight on their shoulders in Season 2, that when Maddie’s character kind of comes into the mix, they are sort of thrown through a nice distraction.”
Skarsgard adds, “She comes in and she gets to know both Roman and Peter as an outsider, not knowing anything from Season 1 or these two characters. It will be really interesting where she takes that character as well. She comes in in episode 2. … I’m really glad she’s a part of it.”
It’s unclear if there will be romantic tensions between Roman, Peter and Miranda, but both men have proven they have a thing for blondes. “There’s definitely some tension between Roman and Miranda,” Skarsgard teases.
“She comes to town and kind of ends up at Roman’s door. She had not planned that at all, but I think Hemlock Grove has this little thing where it kind of decides whether people are going to stay there or not; the town itself, it’s kind of like the Bermuda Triangle,” he says. “She’s just kind of driving through Hemlock Grove, and she just kind of gets caught up in it.”
According to Brewer, Miranda’s involvement in the series reveals a very different Season 2. “While last season was the kind of murder mystery, this season does have different elements to it,” she says. “While last season, yes, was thrilling, this one’s really just kind of twisted a little. It just takes some turns that you wouldn’t expect, and Miranda’s in there doing stuff. I don’t know how it’s going to work out for her, but I’m excited to find out about it.”
“Hemlock Grove” Season 2 premieres in its entirety on July 11 on Netflix.
