Just what is Saul playing at? He is creating quite the web of intrigue on “Homeland,” and in the latest episode “A Red Wheelbarrow,” he truly keeps Carrie in the dark about the biggest part of it.
She is not going to be happy when she finds out he’s kept from her his plan to go retrieve Brody, though the final purpose of that mission is unclear. It seems to have something to do with putting Javadi into a position of military power in Iran, but how does Brody factor into that? Will Saul make Brody a military hero? Throw him under the bus? Give him to the enemy government? Whatever his need for Brody is, his plans at least involve something that Carrie can’t know about.
As Carrie’s pregnancy advances (she’s at 13 weeks, for the record), she is getting more and more reckless. Her need to vindicate Brody is increasing as the time she has to do so decreases, to the point that she almost blew the entire mission because she wanted to stop Franklin from killing the true Langley bomber. Not only did she fail to do that or care to see that she was acting completely irrational, but she also got herself shot in the shoulder by Quinn, which won’t do much to lower her blood pressure.
Saul is trying to execute his plan in the time that he has left as commander of the CIA, but he’s missing the pieces falling apart around him. This Fara storyline is getting complicated, as she clearly is not interested in being a part of an organization that lies to her and betrays her trust. Now her loyalty being questioned likely won’t endear her to the CIA anymore, and there’s a sense of foreboding surrounding that entire storyline. Seriously, this can’t end well.
Then there’s Saul’s obliviousness to how much he’s already lost Mira. Sure, he’s trying to repair their relationship and she wants to let him, but leaving her for a week? Pulling the same stuff he always does? You’d think by now he would have learned how to better balance the parts of his life, but the fact that the man she was sleeping with is now breaking into their home and trying to steal information doesn’t bode well for anyone in the Berenson family.
Brody clearly is a big part of “Homeland’s” upcoming episodes, but “A Red Wheelbarrow” only raises more questions about his involvement in this season. Is Saul’s endgame really what he says it is? Will Brody end up better or worse off than being addicted to heroin in Caracas? And will Carrie forgive Saul for keeping her out of the loop once again? This whole situation feels like an uneasy house of cards that is only seconds away from collapsing, for better or worse.
