It’s (finally) official: CBS has picked up “How I Met Your Mother” for its ninth — and last — season in 2013-14.
The renewal comes after a month of false starts and speculation about whether the show would get one more season. Just a day ago, co-creator Craig Thomas would only say he expected an announcement “pretty soon.”
All five members of the core cast — Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Jason Segel, Alyson Hannigan and Neil Patrick Harris — will return, and CBS will have a full season’s worth of episodes. The network also promises that fans will meet Ted’s (Radnor) future wife in Season 9, finally fulfilling the show’s title.
Just when viewers will meet her is still up in the air. The show has established that Ted meets his future wife at Robin (Smulders) and Barney’s (Harris) wedding, which will take place at the end of this season, but whether we see her face then remains to be seen.
“Through eight years, ‘How I Met Your Mother’ has mastered the art of leading-edge comedy, emotional water-cooler moments and pop culture catch-phrases,” CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler says. “We are excited for [co-creator] Carter [Bays], Craig, [executive producer/director] Pam Fryman and this amazing cast to tell the final chapter and reveal television’s most mysterious mother to some of TV’s most passionate fans.”
“HIMYM” is averaging 9.75 million viewers and a 4.0 rating among adults 18-49 this season. It also has the youngest audience of any show on CBS.
