Just how the show, currently titled “How I Met Your Dad,” comes together remains to be seen. “HIMYM” creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas can, however, say for sure what it won’t be: a retelling of the “How I Met Your Mother” story from the Mother’s (Cristin Milioti) point of view.
“It’s not going to be introduced on ‘How I Met Your Mother,'” Thomas says. “‘How I Met Your Mother’ will have its own concise, neat ending, and this will be a whole new show with all new characters. It’s not the Cristin Milioti show, it doesn’t back up and tell her story — it’s brand new.”
In that sense, it’s probably better to think about “How I Met Your Dad” as something akin to “Parks and Recreation.” That show isn’t technically spinoff of “The Office,” but its creators (Mike Schur and Greg Daniels) worked on “The Office” for a long time, and the filming styles and comic sensibilities of the two shows are pretty closely linked.
Bays and Thomas are co-creating the new show with Emily Spivey (“Up All Night”), and Bays says Spivey will be “at the center” of it. Part of the reason he and Thomas want to work on “How I Met Your Dad,” though, is they’re still having fun on “HIMYM.”
“There’s an apocryphal story that I’ve always heard that’s always haunted me about a writer for ‘Cheers,’” Bays says. “… They did the finale, they had the live viewing party where everyone got drunk. And he made it all the way through that and didn’t get emotional, didn’t cry. The moment he breaks down crying is the next week, he’s in the shower and thinks of a ‘Norm walks into the bar’ joke. That’s the moment where it’s like, ugh — Norm’s never going to walk into the bar again. Maybe subconsciously that was part of our agreeing to try to continue this story.”
Adds Thomas, “I don’t know if you can tell by watching ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ but Carter and I are very nostalgic for the past in general. The spinoff … if it goes, will be very much its own beast, but there is something comforting in knowing if you have some great idea for another love story, another dating story, another breakup story, anything in that world, there might be another place to tell a new version of that.”
