Get More: 2011 VMA, Music

If this is any indication, the director’s commentary on the final cut “The Hunger Games” is going to be a lot to digest.

After debuting the quick teaser for the upcoming film during the Aug. 28 Video Music Awards, director Gary Ross sat down for a Skype session with MTV to explain the short spot and elements of the production — possibly because the trailer gave away so little.

One of the biggest takeaways is the motivations behind having Gale (Liam Hemsworth) narrate the spot.

“I think, as everyone knows, Gale is an enormous part of Katniss’ (Jennifer Lawrence) life,” says Ross. “He’s not as big a part of the first book. But he’s very present, and very important. He’s in her head, he’s in her life, he’s something that echoes with her throughout the Games.”

Ross apologizes for how little he’s able to give fans at this point — they’re still filming in North Carolina — but he did seem particularly excited about one performance that couldn’t make it to the trailer. “Wait until you see Stanley Tucci do Caesar Flickerman.”

Do Ross’ explanations about the teaser make you like it any more?
