The Oscar-nominated screenplays both defeated some tough competition to win their respective categories Saturday (Feb. 20).

Mark Boal, a journalist turned screenwriter, was lauded for his best original screenplay for “The Hurt Locker,” about a special unit that defuses bombs in Iraq.

Boal beat out  the screenwriters for “(500) Days of Summer,” “Avatar,” “The Hangover” and “A Serious Man.”

“Up in the Air,” by Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner, took home the best adapted screenplay award. It had gone up against “Crazy Heart,” “Julie & Julia,” “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” and “Star Trek.”

Finally, “The Cove” by Mark Monroe won the best documentary screenplay award.
