We are just hours away from “The Vampire Diaries” Season 3 premiere, vamp fans. Are you feeling the bloodlust yet?
The last time we saw Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev), they shared a sweet but rather chaste kiss. Now that Stefan has hit the road with Klaus, leaving his brother at home with his girlfriend, are we going to see the chemistry between Damon and Elena heat up even more?
Zap2it hit “The Vampire Diaries” set to talk to Ian and Nina about the journey that Damon and Elena are on together this season. First of all, we’re sorry to say that even though she owns the Salvatore house on paper, Elena and Damon are no longer roomies.
“She’s back at Chez Gilbert,” Ian says. “It’s a shame that she’s not at Chez Salvatore.”
That doesn’t mean Damon doesn’t have his eye on her, though. In fact, as Ian tells us, Damon is making plans to get comfortable in Mystic Falls for a very long time. He’s so in love with Elena that he’s willing to spend the next seventy years keeping her safe. “Oddly enough, he’s not chasing her,” Somerhalder says. “He’s pissed about what’s going on. This is not the way he saw his life at all. Now he’s stuck in Mystic Falls taking care of Elena… obviously she will age and grow up and have a career and a family and all that stuff, but he’ll have to be there, watching her.”
Sounds like true love to us! Or, you know… stalking.
Nina says that Season 3 will be a major coming-of-age story for Elena, as she becomes a woman and “her relationship with herself changes.” We’re also going to see — at least for a little while — a more reliable Damon.
“Delena have decided to form a truce and team together for the greater good, and find Stefan,” Nina says. “They’re also finding out about what kind of person Stefan is together. He’s her shoulder to cry on and he’s there for her for the first time. It’s kind of like the roles have reversed… and he’s rising to the occasion which is really sweet, and nice.”
Of course, he’s still Damon, and if he suddenly turned into a trustworthy good Samaritan, we’d all get awfully bored. “They are close,” Ian says. “They’re really close. It’s just that Damon will, inexorably, always do something to screw it up. He’ll hurt her, he’ll kill her brother, he’ll burn her house down.”
He’s not going to burn her house down, but we’re hearing that once again, Damon will do something dangerous and violent — in episode 4, “Disturbing Behavior,” he may lose his cool and snap… as in, a neck. Elena won’t be too pleased about that, we’re sure.
Sigh. Some vampires never change.
“Damon gives Elena things that Stefan doesn’t, necessarily,” Ian says. “He makes her smile. It’s great to see Elena smile.”
Does that mean that the always-angsty Elena is going to get a moment to have a little fun? Heck yeah. “Everyone has their breaking point, so she’s going to reach it, and then she’s just going to say ‘Eff it!'” Nina teases.
“She lightens up,” Ian agrees. “There’s only so much doom and gloom, there are only so many times she can cry before she says, ‘You know what? Screw this. I want to smile.'”
The show returns Thursday (tonight!) at 8 p.m. EST on The CW, but in the meantime, you can watch our video with Ian and Nina below. Keep checking back with Zap2it for more from our interviews with them next week!
