inter womens day gi International Women's Day: What is it, exactly?Hey ladies, it’s International Women’s Day. Which, unfortunately, doesn’t mean we get a day off while men continue to slog away behind their computers. What it does mean, though, is a heightened awareness of women’s issues and equal rights around the world.

And, since women the world over are different, the day has different emphases depending on where you happen to be observing it.

As the Los Angeles Times notes, women in Turkey are marching splattered in fake blood to protest domestic violence, hundreds of women in Egypt marched to demand the right to help draft the country’s new constitution and in Sudan the government is reportedly releasing 4,000 prisoners — including women and children.

In the United States, there is no formal organized event commemorating the day, though last week the United Nations Fund for Gender Equality announced $10.5 million in grants for groups working to empower women around the world.
