Israel Keyes, the man who confessed to killing 18-year-old Samantha Koenig earlier this year as well as up to seven other people, was found dead of apparent suicide in his jail cell in Anchorage, Alaska on Sunday. No foul play is suspected.
Keyes’ capture after he abducted and killed Koenig in February came when he used a credit card linked to her name in Texas. Thanks to his confession, her body was found in April. After he was captured, Keyes admitted to killing a Vermont couple in June 2011 and as many as five other people, though there could be more victims that police have not discovered. Some of Keyes’ crimes date back 14 years, the Associated Press reports.
A 34-year-old self-employed carpenter and Army veteran, Keyes had lived in Alaska since 2007, and also had a property in New York. He was scheduled for a trial in March, and possibly would have faced the death penalty. Police say they will not stop investigating the murder of his victims, as Koenig’s was the only body to be found.
