james carville mary matalin cnn gi James Carville, Mary Matalin out at CNN as shakeups continueThe changes keep rolling in at Jeff Zucker’s CNN and the latest shakeup is the exit of longtime contributors James Carville and Mary Matalin.

The married political experts are famous for their differing views — he’s a proud liberal, she’s a staunch conservative — and both used to have roles in CNN’s one-time signature debate series “Crossfire.”

Politico reported the news, confirmed by Carville who explained the decision was CNN’s. “I was told that they wanted the contributors to be more available — essentially, closer to Washington. I’m not always available, I don’t live there,” Carville, who lives in New Orleans with Matalin, told Politico.

“I’ve got enough acts, I’m not out soliciting other TV gigs,” Carville added. “At some level it makes sense for CNN to move in another direction, and it makes sense for me.”

Matalin later emailed her response: “Agree with everything James said … I loved my time in and out at CNN and more, the many lifelong friendships made there.”

Carville and Matalin aren’t the only major figures leaving CNN. Executive vice president and managing editor Mark Whitaker also announced his resignation from the network.

Meanwhile, CNN has confirmed the hire of ABC’s Chris Cuomo to host a re-vamped morning show premiering in the spring.
