It’s hard not to be jealous of Erica Dasher‘s problems at work. Her character on ABC Family’s “Jane By Design” — high-schooler by day, fashion assistant by other times of day Jane Quimby — has two very cute boys to choose from. Things are heating up with Eli (Bryan Dechart), her slightly older designer coworker, but there’s always been an unspoken attraction to her BFF Billy (Nicholas Roux).
“I’m a very lucky girl,” Dasher tells Zap2it. “I’m just surrounded with beautiful men all the time. I don’t know what I did in a past life, but I’m pretty thrilled about it.”
On Tuesday, July 17, Jane and Eli finally go on the date she’s been owed since her birthday. “It’s obviously complicated because he doesn’t know her age, and because he’s Gray’s nephew. There are a lot of what-ifs in the air. I think Jane is completely unsure how to handle it. It’ll get pretty interesting,” Dasher teases.
Despite the fact that she obviously likes Eli, that tension with Billy doesn’t really go away. “I think it’s important for Jane to meet all these men. I think it’s fun that she gets to, but I think at the end of the day, it’s Billy. It’s gotta be Billy. I think everyone on the show feels that way too. They have so much history and there’s a lot of love between them. You never know what that love is gonna turn into. I think it’ll be a long journey, but I think it’s Billy.”
David Clayton Rogers, who plays Jane’s brother, Ben, also wants to see Jane with Billy. “As Ben I couldn’t recommend anyone more strongly than this kid Billy that I’ve known since he was an infant,” he tells Zap2it. “They are best friends, so what better person to pair up with than a best friend?”
Still, it’ll be a while before they actually get together. “For the show, I think as long as we can make them just miss, the better. As long as you can keep doing that without annoying the fans, I think that’s a good course to take,” Rogers says.
He’s got a point — how great will it be when that finally happens?
But whether it’ll happen before the end of Season 1 is the real question. “There’s a major shift in their relationship, and also there’s a big explosion when worlds collide at the end of the season in a major way. I think that’s something for people to definitely watch for,” Dasher teases. “It’ll be interesting to see how fans react to that.”
“Jane By Design” airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on ABC Family.
