They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery — but they never mention how creepy flattery can be.

Such is the case with Jared Leto. On the occasion of the 17-year anniversary of Kurt Cobain‘s death actor, 30 Seconds to Mars frontman and Cobain super-fan posted a video of himself singing Nirvana‘s “Rape Me,” in full Cobain regalia.

The lengths Leto goes to to look like a circa-1993 Cobain are tremendous. The hair, the clothes, the mannerisms and guitar plucks are eerily spot-on. If he’s going for authenticity, job well done. But if he’s going for tasteful, we think he misses the mark.

In the short statement accompanying the video, Leto more-or-less confirms that its a biopic audition reel he never sent in:

I heard today (April 5) was the day Kurt passed away 17 years ago. Can’t believe it’s been that long. So grateful for his contribution and inspiration. Not sure I’d be doing this if it weren’t for him. He gave us all permission to create no matter what our skill set and reminded me that dreams are possible. Thanks for that. This made me recall a short piece of film I shot when I heard they were making a film celebrating his life. I made it to explore the character and explore creative possibilities. I never sent it to the studio or to anyone but thought I’d share it now…

Leto did not come to mind when we dream-cast our own Cobain flick, and this doesn’t do much to change that.
