Lee has signed on to star in a TNT pilot called “Delta Blues,” where he’ll play a Memphis cop named Dwight Hendricks who moonlights as an Elvis impersonator and lives with his mom. George Clooney is among the project’s executive producers.

“Jason Lee is the ideal choice to bring the compelling, off-kilter Dwight Hendricks to life,” says Michael Wright, TNT’s head of programming “‘Delta Blues’ is shaping up to be a hugely entertaining show and a great fit with our lineup of original dramas.”

Lee earned a pair of Golden Globe nominations for playing the karma-seeking Earl Hickey on “My Name Is Earl.” NBC canceled the show last spring, and there was some talk that it might jump to TNT’s sister network TBS, but a deal never materialized.

“Delta Blues” comes from writers Liz M. Garcia (“Cold Case”) and Joshua Harto, an actor (“The Dark Knight”) making his first foray into scripting. Clooney and his partner, Grant Heslov, are executive producing with Garcia, while Harto will get a producer credit. Clark Johnson (“The Wire,” “The Shield”) will direct the pilot and also receive an exec-producer credit.

Lee has a pair of movies hitting theaters in the next few months. A sequel to “Alvin and the Chipmunks” arrives in December, and the thriller “Columbus Circle” is due next summer.
