jeremy irons gay marriage vs incest gi Jeremy Irons thinks legalizing gay marriage will lead to fathers marrying sons

“Beautiful Creatures” star Jeremy Irons thinks legalizing same-sex marriage will create loopholes that will let lawyers run wild. That’s the thrust of his controversial comments on “HuffPost Live” about same-sex marriage and incest.
The Oscar winning actor sat down with host Josh Zepps to discuss, among other things, the topic of same-sex marriage, which is currently being debated in both the U.S. and Irons’ native England. Irons says he doesn’t have a strong opinion one way or the other on the issue, but … “I just worry about that,” he says. “I mean, tax-wise is an interesting one, because you see, could a father not marry his son?”
When Zepps points out there are laws against incest, Irons responds, “It’s not incest between men. Incest is there to protect us from having inbreeding. But men don’t breed, so incest wouldn’t cover that. Now if that was so, then if I wanted to pass on my estate without death duties, I could marry my son and pass on my estate to him.”
Irons says civil unions in England offer the same rights as marriage, but without one partner taking on the other’s last name. “It seems to me that now they’re fighting for the name,” he says. “And I worry that it means somehow we debase or we change what marriage is.”
Though he reiterates he doesn’t “have a strong feeling either way,” Irons says he wishes good luck to anyone who chooses to live with one other person. “Living with another animal, whether it be a husband or a dog is great,” Irons says. “It’s lovely to have someone to love. I don’t think sex matters at all. What it’s called doesn’t matter at all.”
Unless you’re worried about taxes, apparently. Check out the interview in the video below.
