jesse jackson jr congress Jesse Jackson Jr. in 'extended treatment' for 'physical and emotional ailments'U.S. Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. has been suffering from “physical and emotional ailments” and is currently “undergoing further evaluation and treatment at an in-patient medical facility,” said his office in a statement released Thursday (July 5).

The Chicago Democrat and son of famed civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson has been on extended medical leave since June 10, reportedly for “exhaustion.” But according to his press secretary, Frank Watkins, “Congressman Jackson’s medical condition is more serious than we thought and initially believed.

“Recently, we have been made aware that he has grappled with certain physical and emotional ailments privately for a long period of time,” the statement continues, adding that Jackson will require “extended in-patient treatment as well as continuing medical treatment thereafter.”

Jackson, who has served in the House of Representatives since 1995, is a target of a congressional ethics investigation for his alleged role in former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich‘s scheme sell President Barack Obama’s U.S. Senate seat. Blagojevich is now in federal prison, serving a 14-year sentence after being convicted of 17 felony corruption charges.

No other details regarding Jackson’s diagnosis or where he is hospitalized have been made available.
