“Fashion Star” is the newest reality offering from NBC that not only lets burgeoning fashion designers compete against one another, but also offers the winning designs for sale in Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue and H&M the very next day.

Jessica Simpson is one of the celebrity mentors and she says she draws her fashion inspiration from her mom.

My icon of fashion is my mom, actually. It’s pretty simple like that,” says Simpson. “We grew up in Texas, we went to malls all the time. I was a preacher’s daughter. We tried to get anything that we could, but we didn’t have a lot of money to work with, so I was the kid who would mix up, match up anything I could to not wear the same thing twice. It was like a goal of my mom and I … she continues to dress me, and continues to inspire me.”

Simpson also offers a few tidbits regarding her beauty icon, her mentoring style and her favorite designers:

  • “Brigitte Bardot is my beauty icon. somebody that I look to and wouldn’t mind looking like at all times. She always has that, I don’t know, that glamorous beautiful sexpot thing down.”
  • “I really take mentoring very seriously … I do know that I have a sensitive spot, I know that I have an endearing spot, I know that I have a challenging spot to make someone go to the next level. I have to push myself daily, so it’s nice to have other people to push along with me.”
  • “I love to mix all different kinds of designers, but I think that it’s important to have that all-American brand. I look to a Ralph Lauren or a Michael Kors, somebody who can do it all. Like Ralph Lauren definitely does it all. Eventually one day, you’re going to be sitting on a Jessica Simpson couch, I guarantee. There are no limits to where I want to go and I want these designers to feel that as well.”

“Fashion Star” premieres Tuesday night, March 13 at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
