Grindal — who has long hair and a beard, making him look superficially like popular representations of Jesus Christ — was attending the Cash Converters Players’ Championship tournament when the crowd turned on him. The Mirror Online reports that about 4000 fans began chanting “Stand up if you love Jesus” at the man.
In addition to the indignity of thousands of people yelling, this activity ended up causing a distraction loud enough to bother the competitors. Security eventually escorted Grindal out of the audience and took him to a location where he could watch the match via video.
The Jesus look-alike himself was not ready to turn the other cheek. “It was distressing. I was emotionally distraught,” he told the Mirror. “The crowd were bullying me and picking on me. It would have been OK if security hadn’t made a fuss getting me out.”
Grindal did at least get a signed program from the darts championship runner-up, Kim Huybrechts. The Belgian player signed it, “To Jesus. Hard luck mate.”
