jim bell today show Jim Bell on the way out as 'Today' show executive producerThe man who led the “Today” show’s on-camera shakeup over the summer is now on his way out as well.

Jim Bell, who has executive produced NBC’s morning show since 2005, will depart the show and be replaced by NBC News executive Alexandra Wallace and a yet-to-be-named producer, The New York Times reports. A timetable for the change hasn’t been set.

Bell, who worked at NBC Sports before taking over “Today,” will return to that part of the business as executive producer of NBC Universal’s Olympics coverage, the Times says.

Bell was seen as the driving force behind the ouster of co-anchor Ann Curry earlier this year. “Today’s” ratings had been on the wane for some time, but after Curry left in late June (Savannah Guthrie took over as co-anchor opposite Matt Lauer) they dropped further. Rival “Good Morning America” has taken over as the ratings leader, beating “Today” for 11 straight weeks (through Oct. 26) in viewers and nine consecutive weeks among adults 25-54.

Wallace is a senior vice president at NBC News and also executive produces the prime-time newsmagazine “Rock Center with Brian Williams.” She would be the first woman to run “Today” in its 60-year history.
