jimmy fallon late night Jimmy Fallon gets Emmys hosting job“Late Night” host Jimmy Fallon will move up to primetime to host the 62nd annual Emmy Awards in August.

NBC and the television academy announced Tuesday (May 4) that Fallon would be the host of this year’s awards, which will air live at 8 p.m. ET/5 PT on Sunday, Aug. 29. (The earlier-than-usual date is so the awards won’t interfere with NBC’s lucrative “Sunday Night Football” coverage.)

“Jimmy Fallon provided one of the most memorable and talked about moments from last year’s Emmy telecast,” TV academy chairman and CEO John Shaffner says, referring to his Auto-Tune bit (which is below, if you need to refresh your memory). “He is a bright, insightful and energetic entertainer who made his name performing on live television, and we welcome him to host our annual celebration of great television.”

Adds Fallon: “Hosting the Emmys has been a dream of mine ever since they told me I was doing it.”

Fallon will be following in the footsteps of his “Late Night” predecessor, Conan O’Brien, who hosted the Emmys the last time they were on NBC in 2006. Needless to say, that wasn’t an option this year.

Here’s Fallon’s bit from the 2009 Emmys.
