jimmy smits gi 320 Jimmy Smits goes from 'Outlaw' to L.A. mayor at NBCJimmy Smits has apparently gotten over NBC canceling his show “Outlaw” earlier this season, because he’s back at the network in a new drama project.

Smits will play the mayor of Los Angeles in a pilot from “Traffic” and “Syriana” writer Stephen Gaghan, Deadline reports. The show was formerly called “S.I.L.A.” (which stood for Special Investigations Los Angeles), but that name has been shelved for now.

Like “Traffic” and “Syriana,” Gaghan’s pilot will follow multiple characters; it’s set in the overlapping worlds of police work and politics and Los Angeles. It also stars Noah Emmerich (“White Collar,” “Little Children”) as the head of the city’s special investigations unit, along with Madchen Amick (“Damages,” “My Own Worst Enemy”), Daniella Alonso (“My Generation”) and Danny Pino (“Cold Case”).

A couple other bits of casting news:

Damon Wayans has been tapped to star in a CBS comedy based on the life of ESPN Radio host Colin Cowherd. Wayans will play the Cowherd character, who we’ll see both at work and at home. It would be Wayans’ first network series since “My Wife and Kids” ended in 2005. [Hollywood Reporter]

Also: “Prison Break” and “Heroes” alum Robert Knepper has joined NBC’s drama “Reconstruction”; Madeleine Stowe and Henry Czerny have been cast in “Revenge” at ABC; “JAG” star David James Elliott has joined another ABC show, “Good Christian B***hes”; and Maulik Pancholy (“30 Rock”) has been added to NBC’s Whitney Cummings comedy.
