We’re not sure that Joaquin Phoenix did his new movie Two Lovers any favors with his appearance on Late Show With David Letterman Wednesday (Feb. 11) night, but people will definitely be talking about him for the next couple days.

Wearing dark shades and a black suit, Phoenix squirmed when Letterman innocently asked an icebreaker about his full beard and needed to be reminded that his co-star in the movie was Gwyneth Paltrow.

He did take it in good stride though when Letterman asked, “What can you tell me about your days with the Unabomber?” and seemed genuinely baffled when the audience laughed at his describing his music as “more hip-hop.”

And, to his credit, when Letterman saved his harshest lines for the end of the interview — “Joaquin, I’m sorry you couldn’t be here tonight … we owe Farrah Fawcett an apology” — Phoenix chuckled, “You’re funny … You’re a funny dude.”
