The latest government institution to come under fire from John Oliver and “Last Week Tonight” is student loans. It’s no secret that student loan debt has inflated massively over the past decade, and Oliver in particular pointed out the issues with the debts acquired by for-profit schools like ITT Tech and University of Phoenix.
But, as Oliver notes at the end of the above segment, even if the debt from those schools was eradicated, student loans would still exist. “Our leaders have decided that while education is incredibly important, it’s not important enough to actually pay for,” he quips.
Oliver’s solution to the problem of student debts might be the only one palatable. “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” airs Sundays at 11 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
