Hamm will play a sports agent who travels to India and launches a reality show to give cricket players a shot at playing professional baseball in the United States. It’s based on the true story of agent J.B. Bernstein. Tom McCarthy (“Win Win”) and Mitch Glazer (“Magic City”) are writing the script, Deadline reports.
The Indian show, also called “The Million Dollar Arm,” drew more than 35,000 prospective contestants. Winners Dinesh Patel and Rinku Singh did make it to America, signing minor-league contracts with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2009. Patel was released after the 2010 season, but Singh is still in the Pirates organization and has also pitched in an Australian league.
The movie will also follow Hamm’s character as he helps the young pitchers, who had never ventured far from their homes in India, learn the game and adapt to life in America. The film will be the first lead movie role for Hamm, a four-time Emmy nominee for his work on “Mad Men.” Filming is set to start in the fall.
