joran van der sloot Joran van der Sloot pleads guilty in PeruJoran van der Sloot, the now 24-year-old Dutch citizen who was suspected in the still unsolved disappearance of American teen Natalie Holloway in Aruba in 2005, pleaded guilty on Wednesday (Jan. 11) to the murder of a 21-year-old Peruvian woman, reports the Associated Press.

“Yes, I want to plead guilty. I wanted from the first moment to confess sincerely,” van der Sloot told the judges. “I truly am sorry for this act. I feel very bad.”

Van der Sloot’s lawyer argued that his client killed Stephany Flores, who met van der Sloot at a Lima, Peru casino, as the result of “psychological trauma” he suffered in the wake of the Holloway investigation.

Judges — there are three presiding in the case — now have 48 hours to render a sentence and the court is set to reconvene Friday to do so.

Van der Sloot had confessed to the Flores murder to police in 2010, telling them he killed her after she discovered information on his laptop linking him to the disappearance of Holloway. Prosecutors, however, say van der Sloot killed Flores in order to rob her. They are seeking a 30-year prison sentence on theft and first-degree murder charges.
