kate gosselin kate plus 8 'Kate Plus 8,' 'Drop Dead Diva' premieres up, MTV Movie Awards downThe return of Kate Gosselin — and her kids — to TLC racked up pretty solid ratings.

The two “Kate Plus 8” specials the cable channel aired Sunday night (June 6) averaged 3.2 million viewers — way off the divorce-filing peak of “Jon and Kate Plus 8’s” 10.6 million viewers, but also up a good amount from the final “Jon and Kate” episodes TLC aired last year. And on a night with heavy competition, that’s a pretty good pull for a reality show.

Gosselin’s new show, “Twist of Kate,” is set to premiere on TLC in the fall.

– The second-season premiere of Lifetime’s “Drop Dead Diva” also improved on its debut numbers from last year.

The dramedy starring Brooke Elliott drew 3.1 million viewers Sunday night, up from 2.8 million for its debut last year. As you’d expect from the female-focused cable network, women made up the overwhelming majority of the audience (2.35 million women over 18). “Diva’s” numbers among women 18-49 and 25-54 were also up.

– MTV is also saying that its Movie Awards improved over last year — and by one measure they did. But by the industry standard of average viewership, the awards fell off from 2009.

Sunday’s awards, hosted by Aziz Ansari, averaged 4.6 million viewers across MTV, MTV2 and VH1. That’s down from the 5.3 million people the awards brought in last year.

MTV, meanwhile, notes that the awards were “watched by” 16.4 million people, a 2 percent improvement over last year. That figure, however, counts anyone who watched at least a minute of the telecast, not the average from throughout the show.
