katie couric demi lovato Katie Couric reveals bulimia battle to Demi LovatoOn “Katie” today (Sept. 24), Demi Lovato candidly discusses her struggle with eating disorders — but she wasn’t the only one opening up.

Katie Couric reveals that she herself battled bulimia.

“I wrestled with bulimia all through college and for two years after that,” admits the talk-show host.

Like the “X Factor” host, who was treated for her body image issues during a stint in rehab, Couric says, “I know this rigidity, this feeling that if you eat one thing that’s wrong, you’re full of self-loathing. And then you punish yourself, whether it’s one cookie or a stick of gum that isn’t sugarless.”

Lovato’s own problems started much earlier — at age 3. “I remember being in a diaper and rubbing my hand over my stomach…and thinking, ‘I wonder if one day this will ever be flat?’ she says.”

Even worse, she was bullied in school for her weight. “They called me fat and they called me horrible things.”

In November 2010, Lovato, now 20, entered rehab after she hit one of her backup dancers. “I felt horrible,” she tells Couric. “I wasn’t really in control of my emotions at the time. I was just out of control. There’s no excuse for it, but it definitely showed everyone I needed to get help.”

During her three-month inpatient treatment, which she compares to prison, Lovato says she was denied privileges if she “didn’t finish what was on [her] plate: “I had somebody watching over me every single time I ate.”

As Katie notes, developing a “healthy relationship with food…is such a huge thing for people who wrestle with this.”
