keith olbermann espn Keith Olbermann nearing deal to rejoin ESPN

Keith Olbermann might be heading back to ESPN.

The sports/political commentator is nearing a deal to host a late night talk show on ESPN2 (the sister network he helped to launch over 20 years ago), Variety reports. The official announcement could come as soon as Wednesday, though an ESPN spokesman declined to comment and a premiere date is not yet known.

This wouldn’t be Olbermann’s first foray with ESPN — he was one of the most prominent faces on the sports network back in the 90s. He co-hosted “SportsCenter” with Dan Patrick, but after notorious conflicts arose — which were described in the 2012 book, “Those Guys Have All the Fun” — he moved on to other jobs.

What prompted the talks of the previously-thought-to-be-unlikely reunion? With FOX Sports 1 coming next month, ESPN is trying to stay ahead of the game and continue its monopoly of the TV sports landscape. This talk show with Olbermann would certainly help.

Olbermann has since worked with MSNBC for “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” and Current TV.
