No, it’s not the royal wedding. These fancy hats are being worn for the Kentucky Derby 2012. It’s the “Run for the Roses,” so called because a trophy made with 554 red roses is awarded to the Kentucky Derby winner each year. The race takes place at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky and the tradition is for women to wear large and elaborate hats.
The 2012 Kentucky Derby is being held on May 5, which is also Cinco de Mayo. (Take our poll about which drink will be in your hand this Saturday. Will it be a mint julep or a margarita?) The lovely-hatted ladies came out in force and we’ve got the shots for you.
Check out the pictures below and let us know if any animals seem to be hiding in these hats. Which one is your favorite? Hey, anything is better than those fascinators from the royal wedding. Happy 5th!
