kristin kreuk Kristin Kreuk will star in The CW's 'Beauty and the Beast'Former “Smallville” star Kristin Kreuk has landed one of the lead roles in The CW’s “Beauty and the Beast” pilot. (Hint: It’s not the Beast.)

Kreuk will play an NYPD detective in the pilot, Deadline reports. The show is kinda-sorta based on the late-1980s CBS series that starred Linda Hamilton (whose character was a prosecutor) and Ron Perlman.

In the pilot, written by Jennifer Levin and Sherri Cooper (“Brothers & Sisters”), Kreuk’s character, Catherine, was a witness to the murder of her mother several years prior to the start of the series. The Beast in turn killed the killers, and Catherine has been looking for him ever since. The Beast, meanwhile, is the survivor of “a military experiment gone terribly wrong,” per Deadline.

That’s a fairly significant departure from the setup of the ’80s series, in which Perlman’s Vincent helps heal Hamilton’s Catherine after she’s attacked and left for dead. When Catherine sees Vincent for the first time, he explains to her that he was born the way he is.

“Beauty and the Beast” will be the first series-regular role for Kreuk since she left “Smallville” a few seasons back. She had a recurring part on “Chuck” in 2010 and, oddly enough, was also approached for ABC’s “Beauty and the Beast” pilot this season. That version sounds as though it will lean more to the fairy-tale side of the story.
