Before the nominees were announced for 2010’s 52nd annual Grammy Awards, Lady Gaga was considered a lock for Best New Artist. Few artists in history have had a year as good to them as 2009 was to Gaga. However, due to rulebook fine print, Gaga did not receive the nomination, and country stars the Zac Brown Band took the trophy.
Gaga’s song “Just Dance” was nominated for Best Dance Recording at the 51st Grammys, and though it didn’t win, that nomination made her ineligible to win Best New Artist the following year.
Even Recording Academy President Neil Portnow recognized the flaws in the system. “There will be some changes so that particular scenario won’t repeat
itself,” he said in a statement in December.
