law and order cast 320 'Law & Order' officially done, 'L&O: LA' coming next seasonIt’s official: May 24 will be the series finale of “Law & Order” after 20 seasons on the air. But NBC is keeping the brand alive with both “SVU” and a new West Coast version of the show.

The network announced Friday (May 14) that it’s cancelling “Law & Order” — the final episode airs Monday, May 24. But NBC has picked up “Law & Order: SVU” as well as a new series, “Law & Order: Los Angeles” — aka “LOLA” — for 2010-11.

Word of the “L&O” mothership’s impending cancellation leaked on Thursday (May 13), and the network confirmed it Friday, with hearty thanks to creator Dick Wolf for the show’s very long and very fruitful run.

“The full measure of the collective contributions made by Dick Wolf and his ‘Law & Order’ franchise over the last two decades to the success of NBC and Universal Media Studios cannot be overstated,” says Jeff Gaspin, chairman of NBC Universal Television Entertainment. “The legacy of his original ‘Law & Order’ series will continue to make an impact like no other series before.”

With “Law & Order” going away, “SVU” will take over the mantle of the longest-running current drama on network TV. It will begin its 12th season in the fall.

There’s no word on casting yet for “LOLA,” which will follow the same template as the original show. “Brotherhood” creator Blake Masters is executive producing the new show with Wolf.

“Law & Order’s” 20 seasons on the air ties it with “Gunsmoke” for the longest-running prime-time drama in TV history.
