Liam Neeson kicked off the night in the cold open with Jay Pharaoh’s Barack Obama, as he riffed on his “Taken” character in reference to the recent Russian reinforced military presence in Crimea. “Recently, I got a very disturbing call,” Neeson said in his signature gravely voice. “Crimea had been taken. I hate it when things are taken.”
So Neeson had a warning for Vladimir Putin. “I have a very specific set of skills,” Neeson said. “I’m an actor. In Hollywood. With a lot of connections.”
Later on in the night, Jon Hamm popped up in the most random sketch reminiscent of “Girlfriends Talk Show,” called “What Are You Even Doing? You’re Being Crazy.” Hamm didn’t even know what he was doing, as is evidenced by his confused facial expressions. But hey, any Jon Hamm is good Jon Hamm.
Fred Armisen returned to his old stomping grounds to reprise his role as Vladimir Putin’s BFF with Vanessa Bayer. It’s an old, overdone sketch, but it was great to see Armisen back on “Weekend Update” as a well-kept surprise. Plus, Cecily Strong got to rib on her new co-anchor, Colin Jost!
Dunham did have some great highlights, like her constant references to the nudity on “Girls” — which was expected — but the breakout sketch of the night was the “Scandal” spoof. Dunham’s Gladiator is all of us — really confused by the speed of which Olivia Pope and Associates gets things done.
What did you think of Dunham’s “SNL” episode?
