les miserables return to broadway gi 'Les Miserables' returning to Broadway in 2014

There’s nothing like a huge, Oscar-winning film to get a famous musical back on people’s minds. “Les Miserables” is returning to Broadway for the first time in 11 years starting in March 2014.

The return will feature a revised production of the hit play, although it is not yet clear what changes might be made to the original, Tony-winning production. When it first arrived in New York City in 1990, “Les Miserables” played for a successful 13 years, only leaving its home at the Imperial Theatre in 2003.

“This magnificent theater has the perfect blend of scale and intimacy for a story like ‘Les Miserables,’ and I can’t wait to put together a brilliant company to bring this great musical to new generations of Broadway audiences,” the show’s producer, Cameron Mackintosh, said in a statement.

Created by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, “Les Miserables” opened in London’s West End in 1985. It is still playing at the Barbican Theatre there, the longest-running musical play in history.

A traveling version of “Les Mis” is currently touring North America under the leadership of Laurence Connor and James Powell. The two are expected to take charge of the Broadway version as well. Previews for the new “Les Miserable” are scheduled for March 1, with an opening night of March 23, 2014.
