Despite not having the family’s approval, Lifetime is moving ahead with their Aaliyah biopic. It appears the movie is well on its way as the network has provided a first look at star Alexandra Shipp stepping into the late R&B singer’s shoes.
The teaser features Shipp dressed in Aaliyah’s signature ensemble — a crop top and baggy pants — dancing with her long black hair flowing.
Controversy has followed the film since the beginning, with the latest headline maker being Zendaya Coleman exiting from the title role. The actress expressed discomfort in participating with the project due to Aaliyah’s family’s disapproval. It has been reported the singer’s family wanted a big box office movie to be made instead of a made for TV flick.
Aaliyah Haughton died in 2001 in a plane crash with eight others after filming her music video “Rock the Boat” in the Bahamas.
“Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B” is set to debut on Lifetime on Saturday, Nov. 15.
