Dressing a pregnant Lily (Alyson Hannigan) on CBS’ ‘How I Met Your Mother’ has not been a challenge for costume designer Reiko Schoenfeld Kurumada.
“For Lily’s look, we’re really trying to keep in Lily’s normal everyday style,” she says. “We’re just getting bigger sizes. It’s cool to mix a maternity jean with a top you could wear if you were pregnant or not.”
Jeans and leggings are the two things Kurumada has purchased for Lily that actually are made for moms-to-be.
“Alyson and I are having so much fun doing our version of maternity wear,” she says. “We just hope we’re showing viewers who are pregnant they can mix and match from their current wardrobe with a few maternity items. That way everyone in this economy is saving money but still feeling fashionable.”
The leggings Lily wears are Pea in the Pod and Gap Maternity. Her jeans are J Brand.
“That’s a good go-to outfit for us – black maternity leggings with a black bootie and a slim cut tank top with a blazer over it,” Kurumada says. “And they are making fantastic maternity jeans these days. It’s the exact same cut as nonmaternity jeans, but they make these little elastic inserts on the sides.”
A lot of current styles work for women whether they are pregnant or not, and Kurumada offers some examples.
“This jacket is by Thakoon, and the turtleneck is Nili Lotan for Intermix. The bag is Proenza Schouler. It’s an orange suede bag. For Lily’s character, we love to do the most current bags of the season but also fun colors to pop the outfit. Alyson loves handbags, so we make sure that her character always has the bags of the season. She also has a really great blue Chloe bag. A couple of seasons ago, there was a whole episode about how in debt Lily was. So for a schoolteacher, her clothes obviously are out of budget.”
“That’s not a maternity dress. It’s by Proenza Schouler. I purchased that at Intermix. I paired that with gray Wolford tights and gray Chloe boots. That’s a look that we are really trying to do a lot this season for her pregnancy on the show – great sweater dresses and shirtdresses that are not maternity, just are in larger sizes, but with tights and boots. I feel like that’s a really flattering look for her body.”
“That is a Ralph Lauren Collection cashmere sweater, and it’s not a maternity sweater, just a larger size. I thought the cut on it with the leather buckle detail would be really flattering to the belly bump. The boots are Prada.”
“The dress is a long dress by Girl by Band of Outsiders, and the vest is Rag & Bone. The tights are Wolford, and the boots are the same black Prada boots. I like this look as an option because none of it is maternity wear but definitely works as maternity wear. And viewers can see it’s a current outfit that emulates Lily’s style while she is pregnant, but she can also wear it when she is not pregnant.”
