lolo jones olympic qualifying gi Lolo Jones joins U.S. Olympic bobsled team, will skip indoor track seasonControversial Olympic track athlete and media darling, Lolo Jones, will skip the coming indoor track season to train with the U.S. Olympic bobsled team, the Associated Press reports.

The two-time Olympic hurdler has decided to try her hand — and her legs — as a push athlete for the 2014 Sochi Games. ”This is a breath of fresh air – cool, very cool, cold air,” Jones says, after being announced among 24 athletes as part of the team.

Bobsled coach Todd Hays invited Jones and a handful of other track stars to the bobsled push championship, hoping to pique their interest in joining his squad. Track competitors are a draw because the push position requires speed and strength.

After facing criticism from teammates and sports fans leading up to a disappointing showing in the 2012 London Games, Lolo is looking to be out of the spotlight. She hopes the team sport will take some attention off her. “When I came here, I didn’t want any distractions,” says Jones.

Though she’ll skip indoor track, Lolo says she’ll likely resume training during the outdoor track season, and plans to compete in the hurdles at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
