When you think of Desperate Housewives, airing Sundays on ABC, you tend to think of its promotional posters — the gals all dolled up and looking glamorous. Their hair wind-blown, their beautiful gowns draped seductively off their shoulders, their makeup flawless.

But when you think of the characters individually, their inherent styles become much more categorized: Bree is the anal pearl-wearer, Susan is the scattered single mom, Edie is the sexy schemer, and Gabrielle is the glamorous clotheshorse. That leaves Lynette, the most approachable of the group. While her desperation stems from the everyday chores of being a busy wife and mother, she is able to pull it all together with comfortable and casual clothes. Lynette’s style is the very definition of wearability.

Whether she is at the office or at home watching the kids, she keeps things simple with basics that belong in everyone’s closet. From hoodies to pullovers and jackets, she is certain to keep cozy this fall with comfortable tops. Our favorite in the casual luxury department is a roomy gray cashmere hoodie from J. Crew. Ribbed at the cuffs and hem, this sweatshirt is made of Italian cashmere in 12-gauge knit. It’s extravagant and simple all at once.

For a more outdoorsy look, she goes with a Prana Elle pullover in orange. With a 1/2 zip front and hidden pockets, this semifitted top is made of Therma Core and helps keep her warm when relations get chilly. She also keeps a floral print hoodie from Eddie Bauer in her closet, although that feels a little too desperate for our tastes.

Underneath those tops she wears tanks such as Michael Stars’ 4×1 Supima Modal. Considered a perfect layering tank, it is form-fitting and extremely soft. The ribbing adds texture and helps in contouring to your shape. Another great choice Lynette loves is J. Crew’s stretch cotton camisole in black. Made of cotton and spandex, it features adjustable straps and a shelf bra for extra support.

Around the house — and often in the front yard — she tends to wear casual bottoms such as Calvin Klein striped pajama pants. Hey, the neighbors have seen her in worse. She also has a great pair of City-fit striped Addison trousers from J. Crew. Noticing a theme yet? J. Crew is your one-stop Lynette shop. They’re low rise, sitting just above the hip, but they have a wonderful wide leg that is accentuated by slant pockets and a removable string-tie belt. Add a pair of Julia slippers from Think, a pair of Ibizia thong sandals from Ecco or Jungle Moc shoes from Merrell and you can run around like a crazed soccer mom all day long.

Crazed twins and househusband optional.
