fifth harmony macys thanksgiving parade tour gi Macy's Thanksgiving Parade performers Fifth Harmony on touring with Demi Lovato, 'The X Factor,' and moreWhile we haven’t heard much from either of the winners of FOX’s U.S. version of “The X Factor,” the show’s biggest success story is the Simon Cowell-fabricated girl group Fifth Harmony. Think of them as a female, American One Direction: happy, hummable pop music in an adorable package.

After performing on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Nov. 28, the girls — Dinah Jane Hansen, Lauren Jauregui, Ally Brooke, Normani Kordei, and Camila Cabello — will embark on a mini-tour of radio station Jingle Ball concerts before opening for “X Factor” judge Demi Lovato on her 2014 “Neon Lights” arena tour, along with former tourmate Cher Lloyd and fellow girl group Little Mix.

Zap2it caught up with the girls backstage after their recent return to “The X Factor” (this time as guest performers, not contestants), and they said the transition from reality show competitors to legit artists has been a surreal one. “It is so cool how now we get to perform [and] people sing back to us our own songs,” Dinah tells a small group of reporters.

Now they’re not only performing their own music, they’re performing at arenas in front of thousands of people instead of a TV studio in front of hundreds (and, you know, the millions of viewers at home). “We didn’t even dream of something like this,” says Ally. “We just dreamed of meeting [Demi Lovato] and for her to invite us on her tour is amazing.”

Actually Lovato tells Zap2it that she’d love to collaborate with Fifth Harmony. “It might not be every night but we will do something together on tour,” she says. “I am so passionate about them from last year. … I do group text messages with them all the time. They are so funny and have so much energy.”

Says Camila of the potential collaboration, “I feel like I’ll forget that I was just on stage. I’ll just feel like I’m at a Demi Lovato concert.” The girls are still close with their “X Factor” mentor Simon Cowell, and say they can’t wait for him to become a father. “We were really, really excited for him, actually,” says Normani. “We get to babysit,” exclaims Camila. “That is going to be one cute kid.”

Just imagine: “He’s going to dress them in V-necks,” jokes Lauren.

Lovato is one of Fifth Harmony’s major influences, but so is another former Disney queen: Miley Cyrus. Despite the recent frenzied press coverage surrounding the newly 21-year-old’s antics, the girls respect Miley’s fearless attitude.

“People still remember her from the Disney Channel but it all comes with maturity,” says Dinah. “I think that people confuse the fact that Hannah Montana and [Miley] were not the same person. She was playing a character; she is an actress. So I think it is really cool that she has the courage in this world and this society and social media where people are constantly attacking you for being a person, you know what I mean? I think it is amazing that she stays true to herself.”

They’re both playing at Los Angeles’s KIIS-FM Jingle Ball on Dec. 6, and they hope to meet her there. “We can twerk with her,” says Normani. Adds Dinah, “She can booty pop with us!”

Going from relative strangers to best friends and bandmates in less than two years has brought the girls closer — “We’ve been through a lot with each other. We’ve seen each other at our most vulnerable,” says Dinah — but spending 24 hours a day with each other can definitely get monotonous. “That’s why we’re excited to go on the Demi tour — we can see other people,” says Normani with a laugh.

Fifth Harmony’s debut EP, “Better Together,” is out now. A full-length album is scheduled for 2014.
