mad men season 7 split in half 'Mad Men' Season 7 split in half, series will end in 2015

AMC is seeing if the same magic that worked for “Breaking Bad” will work for “Mad Men” as well. The network announced that “Mad Men’s” seventh and final season will be 14 episodes long and be split into two, with the first seven episodes of the extended season airing in Spring 2014 and the second seven episodes airing in Spring 2015.

“We plan to take advantage of this chance to have a more elaborate story told in two parts, which can resonate a little bit longer in the minds of our audience,” series creator Matthew Weiner explains in a press release. “The writers, cast and other artists welcome this unique manner of ending this unique experience.”

“Breaking Bad” pulled the same stunt for its fifth and final season, and it paid off in dividends. When the show’s second half of Season 5 premiered a year after its first half, the amount of viewers tuning into the show more than doubled. With “Mad Men’s” previous seasons available on websites like Netflix, it’s not a stretch to speculate that AMC is hoping people take the year between half-seasons to catch up on the show before it airs its final episodes.

Though “Mad Men’s” Season 6 premiere was down from Season 5, its finale was the highest-rated in the series’ history. More than 2.7 million viewers tuned in to see the show’s final Season 6 episode.
