Aussie actor Brenton Thwaites made his stateside debut in Lifetime’s original movie “Blue Lagoon: The Awakening,” but you’ll be seeing more of him in the future — he’s been cast as Prince Charming opposite Elle Fanning and Angelina Jolie in the 2014 sure-to-be-blockbuster “Maleficent.”
When Zap2it caught up with Thwaites on June 13, he was preparing to fly to London to start production on the Disney film.
The affable actor is the type of person who gets along with everyone — must be that friendly Australian personality — and had only good things to say about his future costars. Fanning, he thinks, is one of the best actresses of her generation. “She’s lovely,” he says. “She’s such a cool girl. I think she’s one of the best young girls out there. She has such a mature presence on screen, and I think she’ll be great. I’m really excited.”
As for Jolie, yep — the Oscar winner is “lovely” as well. “She’s great. Yeah, she was lovely. I just don’t know what to say anymore to this question,” he laments. “I don’t know what to say! She’s lovely, everyone’s lovely, and we’re all working to make this film. [Laughs] Everyone’s so excited to make this cool film so it’s good to be involved.”
Although he’s playing Prince Charming, a.k.a. the fictional character most little girls want to marry, Thwaites says he doesn’t actually feel any pressure at all. “None what-so-trevor,” he cracks. “I like it because it’s so far from my own reality, it’ll be something to play with. It’s different. It’ll take me out of my world.”
Thwaites wasn’t allowed to speak too much to the visual aspects of the film (how top secret of him!), he says he’s looking forward to getting into character by getting “dressed up in the cool costumes and that kind of stuff. I know Robert [Stromberg, the director] and his team have these awesome ideas about the film and it’s a surprise to me as well.”
While being a part of such a huge movie is definitely a life-changer, Thwaites says he hasn’t even considered what his life will be like a year from now when “Maleficent” comes out.
“If I look back a year ago, my life was so different, and if I look back a year before that, my life was so different,” he says. “Every year things happen and for me at the moment it’s just trying to settle in and keep my feet on the ground. I just moved to America, I just moved to L.A., and now I’m shooting this in London, I’m going to come back to L.A. It’s just taking it step by step and trying to do the best you can.”
