manti teo nev schulman catfish producer Manti Te'o's girlfriend hoax being investigated by 'Catfish' producer Nev SchulmanIn one of the most bizarre stories to come out of sports this year, Deadspin did some investigating and published an expose about Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o (above, left) and his fake girlfriend — the girlfriend who supposedly died of leukemia the same day Teo’s grandmother passed away, a story that captured national attention in the news.

Once news of the hoax broke, Notre Dame was quick to respond. In a press conference, the school’s athletic director, Jack Swarbrick, said that the school was informed of the hoax by Te’o back in December and at that time they hired an outside investigator to look into the “Catfish”-like fraud.

“Catfish” is a term used to describe someone who has created a fake social media persona in order to deceive and seduce someone else online. It lent its name to the 2010 documentary “Catfish,” in which producer Nev Schulman (above, right) investigated his own online acquaintances. The documentary was then turned into an MTV show of the same name, where online relationships are investigated.

Now Schulman says he is going to investigate this fraud that was supposedly purported on Te’o, since there is still much speculation as to how much he actually knew about the situation.

Schulman tweets, “I am working on finding out more about this @MTeo_5 #Catfish story. I have been in contact with the woman involved and will get the truth.”

It’ll be interesting to see what Schulman discovers.
