A black cocktail dress worn by Marilyn Monroe in 1958 sold at auction on Sunday (May 8) for a record-breaking $348,000.
The legendary film siren wore the dress — a black crepe cocktail-length dress with deep v-neck and low cut back and pouf hemline — to a party at the Beverly Hills Hotel, according to the sellers, Julien’s Auctions. The only identification in the dress is a sewn in label reading “front” — a common addition to custom-made garments from that era. No size is indicated and the designer is unknown.
Monroe also appears in the dress on the cover of a book, “Marilyn Monroe: From Beginning to End,” by Michael Ventura. The dress far exceeded auction estimates of $20,000 – $30,000.
Several other Monroe items sold in the auction — everything from an MGM-branded one-piece bathing suit ($84,000) to a “bra liner” ($6,785).
