mario batali gi Mario Batali apologizes for comparing bankers to Hitler, StalinAnd the stupid comment train keeps on rolling. The latest passenger? Celebrity chef Mario Batali who likened bankers to Hitler and Stalin.

On Tuesday (Nov. 7), Batali was participating in a Time magazine event promoting the Person of the Year issue. After nominating writer Michael Pollan, Batali added, “”But I would have to say that who has had the largest effect on the whole planet without us really paying attention is the entire banking industry, and their disregard for the people that they’re supposed to be working for.”

He continued: “The way the bankers have toppled the way money is distributed — and taken most of it into their own hands — is as good as Stalin or Hitler and the evil guys.”

The banking industry immediately retaliated, pushing the Twitter hashtag #bataligate and asking people to boycott his high-end restaurants.

And when it was time to issue an apology, it also came via Twitter:

“To remove any ambiguity about my appearance at yesterday’s Time Person of the Year panel, I want to apologise for my remarks,” he tweeted. “It was never my intention to equate our banking industry with Hitler and Stalin, two of the most evil, brutal dictators in modern history.”
