matt lauer tonight show with jay leno Matt Lauer discusses his No Shave November plans on 'The Tonight Show with Jay Leno'

It’s that time of year when men’s shaving products stock goes way down … Mo-vember, a.k.a. No Shave November. It’s that one month of the year when men nationwide grow out their mustaches for charity in order to raise money and awareness for men’s health problems, including prostate and testicular cancer and mental health issues.

“Today Show” host Matt Lauer showed up on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” with a healthy amount of scruff to discuss his No Shave November plans. “It’s No Shave November, and we’re trying to raise awareness for men’s health,” Lauer says. “At the ‘Today Show,’ we’re all growing beards. We’re trying to get people to tune in and say, ‘Wow they look awful, but hey, I should get checked out.'”

Lauer also learned that while he can’t shave for the entire month, he is allowed to make sure he doesn’t look like an unkempt monster. “I’m allowed to trim it, according to the rules of No Shave November,” Lauer says. “I’m allowed to trim my beard. I don’t need to get into Boston Red Sox territory.”

In addition to growing out his beard, Lauer also participated in a live prostate exam with fellow host Al Roker.

“We decided to call attention to this issue. Did you know that 97% of prostate cancer is curable if its caught early?” Lauer says. “We didn’t go in the room together but we went to the doctor’s office together. It only took a total of 34 seconds, the full screening. For some reason, guys are just freaked out by it. There is something about it that intimidates guys.”
